This university was established as a college in 1949 with the name of Los Angeles-Orange County State College. Initially, it offered 25 courses and had only 13 teaching members. In 1950, after voting by the natives, 322 acres of land was bought in the name of this institution- known as Long Beach State College.
In 1960, the distinct California State Colleges were converted into a whole system by bringing them together. The system turned The California State University and Colleges, which ultimately became The California State University in 1982.
